Budget Cuts - Center Section

Music in Waukesha Needs Your Help!

What is going on?

  • Budget reductions over the past 10 years have affected music programs throughout the district.
  • Music has been cut to the point that starting next year, instruments are not offered in the elementary grades, also general music is reduced with one less year of instruction.
  • Middle school students have fewer electives in the 7th and 8th grade thus limiting the choices for music and after next year, 7th grade no longer has a music requirement.
  • Science and technology education, to which music is vital, does not include a music requirement.
  • Emphasis on test scores for math and language ignores the fact that music improves both.
What is the problem with this plan?

  • Students with music training have stronger math and language skills.
  • The majority of High School Valedictorian candidates have music training.
  • Music students have higher SAT scores.
  • 21st Century Skills of problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity are learned through music.
  • Music is the one language that is known to all, it crosses cultural barriers and inspires peace.

What is the school district doing?

  • Discussions are happening!  The Curriculum & Instruction Committee has encouraged district administrators and the music department to find a plan for bringing back instruments to elementary schools.
  • It is important that the Curriculum & Instruction Committee, district administrators and the music department work together so we are not just solving one problem while creating another.
  • Instrumental music must be brought back to the primary levels while maintaining the great music programs that are at our middle schools and high schools.

What can you do?

  • Write to school board members (addresses, phones, and e-mail listed on the right panel).  Explain your experience and why music education is important to your student.
  • Communicate with the principals.  Let them know if you thought a concert or other experience was meaningful for your child; let them know if you are disappointed that your 7th grader didn't have room in their schedule for 8th grade band, etc.
  • Speak to your student’s music teacher, attend concerts and support the arts!
  • Attend the meetings, become aware of the issues and vote accordingly.
  • Without strong elementary and middle school music programs, our high school programs, which boast many of the school’s great achievers will decline.
