Budget Cuts - Center Section

Waukesha West BandWhat's Going On?

  • There is an immediate threat to the music programs in our school district. It is proposed that the 5th grade band and orchestra programs get cut. But this is just one part of a bigger picture where cuts will have to be made each year as the district is constrained by Wisconsin law in the way it can manage costs and revenue.
  • No 5th Grade Band. And worse. The elimination of 5th grade band will result in fewer students signing up for instrumental music, and ultimately larger class sizes.

  • Waukesha North BandIt means smaller bands. It would also seriously jeopardize the ability for high school bands to participate in community parades and events, compete in State Marching competitions, Jazz Festivals, and All-State Middle and Honors Band programs.

  • Save my property values. People move to Waukesha for good schools and quality of life. Our bands are known around Wisconsin and the United States.

Express your concern about what is happening in your district. Explain that your property values are largely based on the quality of your school district, and you do not want to see these.
  • Waukesha South BandWhy is this happening? The problem is caused by two conflicting state laws, one capping the amount a school district can spend, and another ensuring a minimal benefit to teachers/staff in salaries and benefits. The result is a built-in budget deficit each year of 2% that cannot be avoided by law.

  • This problem affects districts with falling enrollment more seriously.

What can I do?
  • Waukesha South BandsYou can help. Now. We need people to contact the school administrators and school board members to express their support for not cutting elementary band and orchestra.

  • Saving band makes good $ sense. While this is an emotional situation, the reasons for saving music are not. Bigger bands mean smaller class sizes overall.

We need help making phone calls, writing letters, and other advocacy needs.
  • Contact your state legislators. Don't know what to write? We can provide you with the facts. Ask us.

  • Call your Board Members to express your views.... AND ask how you can help. We need to pull together to help change the climate to one that is favorable for education in Madison.

  • Tell as many people as you can in the School District of Waukesha about why the Revenue Caps need to be repealed.

  • We will lose this battle if we sit on the sidelines. Now is the time!
