Happy Ads for Marchfest (New!)
A great way to support your student, friends, or the whole band - place a Happy Ad in the 2010 Marchfest program. Details are on the form (click here or on the PDF Downloads page). These are due Tue Sept 7th! Proceeds go to supporting the band
2010-2011 Band Fees (New!)
Band fees will be collected this year by our Band Treasurer, Theresa Westphal. Marching Band Students should pay during Band Camp (August 2-5). Band Students who are not part of the Marching Camp will need to pay during School Registration - a table at Registration will be set up for this. Fees are are as stated in the summer mailing -- Marching Band only: $150.00 (includes Colorguard); Concert Band only: $50.00; Swap: $200.00; Concert and Marching: $200.00
This means, Marching Band students should pay at the beginning of Camp in August! Deferred Payment plans are available (talk with Theresa). For those who have nothing currently in their Individual Student Account (ISA) and have no other means to pay at this time, they will be able to use their ISA money as fundraisers occur (talk with Theresa).

The Contacts information has been updated with the Band Booster Officers for the 2010/2011 school year. Thank you to each of you for your time helping the band with these roles.
2010-2011 Band's Web Calendar (New!)

2010 Summer Band Picnic (New!)
August 4th, 6pm, Buchner Park Shelter and pool. Click Here for more info! Join us for an evening as we relax and have fun with Blackshirt Band members and their families. After eating, the Buchner pool is open to us for swimming.
2010 Marchfest Planning (New!) We've begun plans for the 21st Annual Marchfest, scheduled for Sept 25, 2010, at South's Stadium. Volunteers are needed, and information about the areas where we need help will be emailed soon. Here are some materials that we will be using:

A DVD highlighting South's Bands' events during the year is available in the Band room for $3.00 each (all proceeds go to the band). The video includes these programs:
1. 2009/2010 YEAR BOOK - 15 Minutes Highlights from the events this past year
2. 2010 SENIORS - 3 ˝ Minutes A tribute to our graduating Band members
* Copies of the Christmas Truce Concert are still available in the Band room for $1.00
Australia Payments (Reminder) $375 installment payment was due May 17th for those planning on Australia in 2011. See the Payment Schedule. Tentative departure date will be April 21, 2011, returning on April 30, 2011. The dates are NOT locked in yet. If you have questions, contact Claudia Barron: redriderfx@att.net
June 30th, Great Lakes Scrip (Reminder) Orders will be placed monthly on the last business day of the month at 4pm. Orders must be pre-paid. See instructions. Orders will be placed over the summer at 4pm on June 30, 4pm on July 30th, and 4pm on August 31. Since the band room will usually be closed, drop them off or mail them to Therese and when they come in, she will contact you (be sure to tell her how to contact you!). Her address is:

Congratulations to South's WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Participants!
Congratulations to members of the Band, Orchestra and Choir who participated this past Saturday at UW-Whitewater for State Solo and Ensemble. Click HERE for scores. The Blackshirt musicians qualified for an unprecedented 30 events involving nearly 50 solo and ensemble members. Various groups and soloists received 9 - level II ratings for excellence and 20 events scored a "superior" rating of 1st. Notable 1st place results included performances by our Madrigal Singers, the String Choir, and finishing with a 1st rating and perfect score, The Blackshirt Jazz Band. Laura Como received the "Exemplary Clarinet Performance Award" as the most outstanding Clarinet performer for the day. Congratulations go out to Laura and all of our Waukesha South Musicians.
Congratulations Jazz Band!
This past weekend, South's Jazz Band performed and competed at the Bob Kames Jazz Festival. They placed 5th out of 14! A great job, and a lot of fun! Click HERE for more info.
AND
Tuesday night (April 20) was South's annual Jazz Day. The Jazz Band was involved in morning workshops with special guest artist, virtuoso saxophone player and South graduate, Jason Gillette. The morning activities concluded with a mini-concert for all staff and students. At 7:30pm, they then performed a full Evening Concert. Photo's are on the Gallery site. A 1 hour DVD Video was made and can be purchased in the band room, $1.00 each, all proceeds go to the band.

Suites & Treats Concert
The Suites & Treats Concert on March 24th was really great! Our band-members who play with the Orchestra and who played during the intermission did a really nice job. Photos are in the Gallery site.
WSMA Results
The Blackshirt Bands were the talk of the day at Saturday's WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival (3/13) with many judges and other band directors going out of their way to comment on the number of outstanding performances by South students. Leading the medal count for the day, South students earned 138 gold medals and 31 silver medals. In addition to winning the medal count, South is also sending more students to State than any other school with an astonishing 17 events qualifying for this honor. Congratulations to all of our students!
BINGO
On Sunday night, Jan 31st, we hosted our first BINGO Fundraiser at South with the help of the Bob Kames Foundation (www.BobKamesFoundation.org). Over one hundred of us participated, great snacks were provided, and the Jazz Band performed. Thank you to the many people who helped make this a success, to the Jazz Band, and to everyone who participated as this will help our band's fund raising needs. Over $600 was raised for the band!

CONGRATULATIONS - Twins are born!
Mr K is a Grandpa! Twin grandchildren Emma Grace and Emmit Guy Riffe were born Thursday night, both at 5 lbs 5 oz. The babies are perfect and mom (Stacia) is doing well.
An Excellent Winter Showcase
Winter Guard and Winter Drumline performed on Saturday Jan 9th at South. Photo's are in the Walgreens Gallery. Video of the event is on YouTube (click the YouTube link on the left).
Holiday Concert a Success!
The Waukesha South Bands performed "A Christmas Peace" based on music that was commissioned for them, called "Homage and Honor: The Christmas Truce." Congratulations to all on a GREAT performance. Photo's are in the Walgreens Gallery. A DVD of the Dec 21st performance is available for a small donation ($1.00) to the band (all proceeds will go to the band's general fund raising needs). Have your student put $1 in the band's safe marked as "donation" and they can pick up a DVD in the band room. The DVD contains video of the performance and the supplemental video clips that told the story.

Winter Color Guard Info Meeting, Nov 12th

2010 WSMA High School State Honors
The WSMA High School State Honors Music Project registration is open now and closes Friday 12/4/2009 at midnight. Late registrations are not accepted. Audition invoices and fees with signatures should be sent to WSMA and must be postmarked no later than Dec 11, 2009. Audition registration is online: www.wsmamusic.org
Two from South Selected for State Honors Band
Waukesha South Bands had several musicians try out for the State Honors Band again this year, congratulations to all who tried out. Selected to the State Honors Band were Andrew Sowatzke and Laura Como, our hats go off to them and we wish them the best as they travel to Madison over teachers convention to play with the Honors Band. Navy Pier, Chicago, Oct 4th
The Marching Band performed on Navy Pier on the Grand Staircase for a large audience on Sunday afternoon. Pictures are in the Gallery (the Band's Walgreens site).
1st place at Cranfest in Warrens, WI
Congratulations to the South Band for 1st place in class AAAA at the 2009 Cranfest Parade competition. We all got a bit wet, and a little cold, but it was a great time and an excellent performance! Pictures from the trip are in the Gallery.

Over 4,000 band students participated at Camp Randall Stadium during the Badger Football Game's 1/2 Time show. South's band then headed to the Dells for team-building and fun. Pictures from the weekend are in the Gallery. |

Smart Music
The band is using a computer program called Smart Music this year. Ordering information for subscribing to Smart Music at home is located here.
Support the 'All School Boosters' The more we support the All School Boosters, the better chance we have of band funding. We need at least 50% membership of band parents. Become a member by purchasing an activity pass. A Booster Club sign-up sheet was included the South Spotlight for back-to-school. The All School Boosters will also have a table at registration, Southfest and the first few football games. By joining you are getting discounted access to most of South’s sporting events, as well as an opportunity to qualify for a senior scholarship for your student...
